Egypt’s largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, said it would begin talks Sunday with the government to try to end the country’s nearly 2-week-old political crisis but made clear it would insist on President Hosni Mubarak’s immediate ouster.
These past 2 weeks as I watched the events unfold in Egypt I couldn’t help but remember how Carter lost Iran back in 1979. I see the uprising in Egypt, I see a dictator who kept the region stable for 30 years, I see Carter II undermining that dictator/ally and taking a big risk of losing Egypt to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Now the MB is beginning to emerge on the Egyptian national scene. The organization that was outlawed in 1954 is now making headway at the negotiation table and is no longer outlawed but legit…This in a 13 day time span.
It will be real interesting to see how this turns out.
